Grove - Moisture Sensor is used to detect soil moisture accurately for plants. The usage for this module is simplified. You can just insert this module into soil and conenct it to single-board microcontroller with Grove cable. Then you can get readings for soil mositure. It is compatible with 3.3 V and 5 V input voltage which make it more adaptive. You can use this module to build loads of smart plant-attending applications.
Note that do not insert all module into soil which probably damage this module. Just insert the leg(golden) of this module into soil.
Note: This sensor isn't protected from contamination or exposure of the control circuitry to water and may be prone to electrolytic corrosion across the probes, so it is not advisable to be left in place or used outdoors.
Item | Parameter | Min | Typical | Max | Unit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Voltage | - | 3.3 | ~ | 5 | V |
Current | - | 0 | ~ | 35 | mA |
Output Value | Sensor in dry soil | 0 | ~ | 300 | / |
Sensor in humid soil | 300 | ~ | 700 | / | |
Sensor in water | 700 | ~ | 950 | / |
Following documents help in getting the user started with Grove.
This demo shows build a simple applicaition with Arduino platform to monitor the environment for plants. When soil moisture descreases, the sensor readings will decrease.
int sensorPin = A0; // select the input pin for the potentiometer int sensorValue = 0; // variable to store the value coming from the sensor void setup() { // declare the ledPin as an OUTPUT: Serial.begin(9600); } void loop() { // read the value from the sensor: sensorValue = analogRead(sensorPin); delay(1000); Serial.print("sensor = " ); Serial.println(sensorValue); }

This demo shows that building a simple applicaiton to attend your plants smartly on LaunchPad platform. With this, you will know whether your plant needs water or not by observing the results from the output of the sensor.
